Business Planning Guide

How often do you get in your car, start the engine, fasten your seat belt, put it into gear and then think, "Where shall I go?" Not often? Why?

Imagine your business is a vehicle. You should not start it up until you have decided where you want to go, and what is the best way to get there. If you know where you want to go, but don't know the way, you use a map or street directory.

Once you know where you want to go, you should make sure the vehicle is capable of making the journey. Have you checked the oil and water, filled the fuel tank, pumped up the tyres, packed your lunch, …?

Therefore, your business plan is both a road map and a checklist to work through before you get started.

However, once you get moving, you need to monitor a number of things. You must watch your speed, the fuel, temperature gauge, the traffic around you, the weather conditions, etc.

Your business plan should have a similar approach to monitoring the running and progress of your business.

When completed, your business plan will be a valuable tool in the day-to-day running of the business. It will help key managers and others associated with the business to guide its future growth.

It may also form the basis of funding proposals, indicating to prospective investors or financiers, the viability of the business. Click to download
