U P D A T E  
Port Stanvac Desalination Plant

Please read below for an update on what has been happening at the Adelaide Desalination Plant week ending 3 July 2009. 

Activities for last week:  Bulk earth works continue with excavation for the plant buildings commencing.

As part of our ongoing environmental commitments, regular meetings with both the Environmental Protection Authority and Department Water Land Biodiversity Conservation continue.

Copies of the Property Condition Surveys undertaken prior to AdelaideAqua commencing works were sent out to relevant residents and business owners.

Looking ahead for this week:  The marine construction methodologies are being developed to allow work to commence two months earlier than first programmed.

Shaft excavations continue to progress.  With works moving towards the commencement of trial controlled blasts in the coming weeks.

AdelaideAqua would like to encourage local businesses to apply for suitable work associated with the Adelaide Desalination Plant project. If your business is interested in participating in or suppling for the above project (or any project in South Australia) it is important to register your interest with ICNSA as they will be the preferred tendering mechanism under the state government Industry Participation Policy on behalf of the prime contractor consortia Adelaide Aqua. Tenders: Building, Schools, Housing and Energy Efficiency

The Federal Government announced a $42 billion economic stimulus package - with $28.8 billion allocated for Building Prosperity through investment in schools, housing, energy efficiency and small business assistance.

The key things that YOU need to know are that: This process is going to move quickly with many projects commencing before 01 July 2009. Where possible, the Government is going to group projects into regions.

To be eligible to bid, you will need to be Pre-Qualified in accordance with the State Government Procurement Procedures. Go to site.

7 May 09 Update. More than 140 South Australian primary schools have been approved in Round 1. Each will get between $250K and $3 million towards new halls and classrooms. Tax Break for Small Businesses

On 12 May 2009 the government announced an R&D Tax Credit to come into effect in the 2010-11 income year. Information. 

Business Tax Break  03 February 2009

This temporary business tax break will help Australian businesses boost business investment, bolster economic activity and support Australian jobs. The Small Business and General Business Tax Break will mean;

A small business that buys and installs a $2,000 computer before the end of June 2009 can claim an additional $600 deduction in its 2008-09 tax return.

A business that buys and takes possession of a $60,000 backhoe by the end of June 2009 can claim an additional $18,000 deduction in its 2008-09 tax return.

Small businesses can claim an additional 30 per cent tax deduction for eligible assets costing $1,000 or more that they acquire from 13 December 2008 to 30 June 2009, and install by 30 June 2010.

For eligible assets costing $1,000 or more that they acquire from 1 July 2009 to 31 December 2009, they can claim an additional 10 per cent deduction where they are installed by 31 December 2010.

To benefit from this tax break a small business must have a turnover of $2 million a year or less. Other businesses can receive the same deductions for eligible assets greater than $10,000.

Assets eligible for the allowance are new tangible depreciating assets and new expenditure on existing assets used in carrying on a business for which a deduction is available under the core provisions of Division 40 (Capital Allowances) in the Income Tax Assessment Act 1997.

Grants: SAIIF and SBDG

There are a number of significant Australian and State Government grants available at the moment for any local businesses operating in the Innovation / Productivity / Environment spaces:

1. In the 1st Round of the South Australia Innovation and Investment Fund (note SAIIF are the larger grants), 4 local Southern Adelaide businesses received $6.5million, towards $27.7million total investment expansion, to create 214 FTE jobs.  

Applications for the SAIIF fund's next round are now open. Information on how to apply is available at www.innovation.gov.au or phone (03) 9268 7548.

2. In the 1st and 2nd Rounds of the Southern Adelaide - Small Business Development Grants (note SBDG are the smaller grants) 13 local Southern Adelaide businesses received $3.2million, towards $5.1million total investment expansion, to create 93 FTE jobs.

It is strongly advised that intending applicants seek advice and support from the City of Onkaparinga Council's Economic Development Officer - Business and Workforce Growth, Glenn Hickling on 8384 0502 or glehic @ onkaparinga.sa.gov.au who can link the applicant to relevant Regional Strategies, Planning Approvals, Business Enterprise Centres, Southern Adelaide Centre for Innovation and Department of Trade and Economic Development as appropriate.  

These links are important to strengthening the local SAIIF and SBDG applications, which are quite competitive.

Grants: Work and Family Program 

This national initiative provides grants of $5000 to $15000 to successful small businesses to implement practices that help employees balance their work and family obligations and improve employee retention and productivity.

Applications for grants are now being invited from eligible small businesses.

It is designed to support projects that benefit both the employer and employees, demonstrate long-term sustainable outcomes for the business and have the potential for wider application to other businesses.

From 1 January 2010, the program will also ensure experts are available in each state/territory office of Fair Work Australia, to provide support for small businesses seeking to implement family friendly arrangements in their workplace.
